The Hidden Benefits of Laser Coaching in a Group Coaching Experience

I received this question on group coaching a couple of months ago: “I'm thinking of doing no "teaching" but doing laser coaching for each person so that everyone can get some experience of my coaching. Is that a good idea and any recommendation on how to best do this?” First of all, this is a GREAT idea!  “No teaching” is actually the best way of being a group coach.  This allows you to focus on bringing out the wisdom of each person in the group, rather than sharing your own. And laser coaching in the group will not only help the person who is being coached; there are hidden benefits for everyone in the group.  Laser coaching of an individual [...]

Addressing Individual Needs within Group Coaching Sessions

How do you coach a group and still make impact on each individual in the group by being able to address their individual needs? When coaching an individual client, you can easily address their needs by listening deeply to them.  The client sets the agenda, and lets you know what is working along the way.  If their gremlins come up, they can be taken care of.  You can hear the right question to ask because there is only one person talking. In a group, this can become exponentially more complicated.  With more people there are more agendas, more gremlins and a bunch more questions. Right?  Well, yes and no. While this is true, it is only partially true.  As a [...]

Vacation days are mandatory!

If you are in the northern hemisphere, summer has just ended, and the kids are back to school.  Chances are, you have taken your annual vacation, and you may not have plans for another vacation for awhile.  But what if you could take vacation days every month?  Wouldn’t that be great? Actually, adding in vacation days every month will help you grow your business. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but it’s really true. Think about it. As a coach, you are also a business owner.  Do you have days when you feel like a computer with too many windows open?  Do you sometimes think, “If I only work harder or if I can put in more hours then I will [...]

What do GREAT Leaders Do That Average Leaders Don’t?

I read an article this past summer on leadership in Forbes, and the points make a great case for how we coaches are perfectly poised to help executives become great leaders. I’d like to share a few main points that were really relevant to coaching. The first thing great leaders do is they find purpose. Who better than a coach to help someone find their purpose? In fact, in addition to life purpose, there is a work purpose. In the Leverage for Leaders coach training, we call this the ‘core work contribution.’ When a leader knows what their core work contribution is, it makes it easy for them to lead with passion. Another thing that great leaders do is they develop awareness. [...]

The Standards of Presence

The Approach: Co-creating a Safe EnvironmentAll groups that come together for the purpose of learning, creating, communicating, living or celebrating are served when the creation and maintenance of a safe space is established. A truly safe group environment provides the basis for powerful transformation, empowering exploration, inspired collaboration and vibrant living. The use of the Standards of Presence, a clearly articulated and easy to understand set of guidelines, provides a proven container of safety in any group. The Underlying Principle: Acceptance The primary underlying principle of the Standards of Presence is acceptance. Know that everyone is doing their best to learn, grow, respect, and follow these Standards. Self-acceptance is particularly beneficial to experience a safe, empowering environment to learn, create, [...]

The Value of Taking Inspired Actions

In developing my coaching practice, I have learned the importance of taking inspired actions. By that, I mean actions that resonate with my essence energy and values. These actions allow me to radiate my true self. When I radiate my true self, the clients that come to me are a mirror of that to me. They are a perfect fit. When my actions are not inspired, I find that I attract a lot of high maintenance clients, ones that are not a good fit. When I first came into coaching, I had a post-it note on my wall with a quote from Abraham-Hicks. And it said, “Line up your energy and take the inspired action.” That really became my business [...]

The Benefits and Pitfalls of Silence for a Coach

As I reflect on the theme of silence, and its value in coaching, I’d like to make a distinction between what I call ‘sacred’ silence and the silence that is just an absence of outer noise.  In that absence of outer noise, sometimes there is a gremlin that becomes easier to hear.  The latter type of silence can be disempowering.  The good news is that there is a way to quiet the gremlins and get into sacred silence that refreshes you. When I first started to meditate, and just sit in the silence so many years ago, I noticed that my inner critical voice would take the opportunity to speak to me.  This actually made me want to move away [...]

Please Hear What I’m Not Saying

Don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by the face I wear for I wear a mask, a thousand masks, masks that I'm afraid to take off, and none of them is me.   Pretending is an art that's second nature with me, but don't be fooled, for God's sake don't be fooled. I give you the impression that I'm secure, that all is sunny and unruffled with me, within as well as without, that confidence is my name and coolness my game, that the water's calm and I'm in command and that I need no one, but don't believe me. My surface may seem smooth but my surface is my mask, ever-varying and ever-concealing. Beneath lies no complacence. [...]

Your Essence Energy

The concept of essence energy came to me when I first began to do speaking engagements. I wanted to have a deliberate way to get into a state of being that was very powerful for me while I was up in front of the room. I wanted to have a way of quantifying my own energy. What I have noticed is that each person has their very own essence energy. Your essence energy is the energy that you exude when you are feeling empowered and strong. It is the feeling you have that comes from deep within, like the name that describes my true self. It’s that feeling you get when you have gotten up on the ‘right side of [...]
