We’ve been talking about the six-step model of group coaching. Now it’s time for the juicy part…the CONTENT! In the third step of a coaching group, the coach provides thought-provoking questions—or jumping off points—that are related to the group theme or topic. In order to do this with ease, there are a couple pieces that need to be put into place: visualizing exactly who is your ideal group member; and determining a topic that is very juicy for this person!

First, get yourself in the receiving frame of mind. You may want to step away from your computer. Instead, this is the time to nourish your creativity. Do you like to journal? Go find that beautiful pen and lovely journal. Burn some incense or a favorite scented candle or diffuse those lavender oil reeds. Do you prefer artistry? Find your drawing pad or parchment paper with paints or crayons or color markers – whatever inspires you! Play some inspiring music, whether it’s Enya or Bon Jovi or Toby Keith.

Do you remember the 5 W’s from grammar school? They’ll prove to be very helpful in visualizing the members of your coaching group, whether you’re journaling or painting. Let’s begin by imagining just ONE member of your group.


  • Is this group member male or female?
  • How old are they?
  • What do they look like?


  • What are the qualities you love about this group member?
  • What kind of car does this group member drive?
  • What’s their favorite color?
  • What’s their occupation?


  • Where do they work? (from their home, in an office, at the vet, etc.)
  • Where are they spending their leisure time?
    • Family
    • Pets
    • Entertainment, Books, Movies, Magazines, TV
    • Hobbies
    • Education
    • Having Fun, Food, Drinks, Vacations


  • When are they available to receiving messages? (How you answer this question will direct how you market your group coaching program.)
    • Are they participating in social media?
    • Can you partner with one of the organizations you uncovered in the “Where” question?


Next we want to dig deeper about their “Big Why.” The topic or theme of a coaching group is important for creating group cohesiveness. The members of your group will be attracted by the topic, so it is important to choose a topic that really resonates with them. Think about the one of the group members above that you have imagined.  What would be a compelling topic that would attract this person?


Every person has a challenge (or two!) that they wish to resolve in their lives.

  • What are the top 3 challenges of this group member?
  • What is the topic that most of the books on their bookshelves?
  • What are they googling?


Likewise, there are desires that each person has in their heart of hearts, that they would really like to fulfill.

  • What are the top 3 desires of this group member?
  • What do they want that they are not quite sure they can have?
  • What is it that would make them truly fulfilled?

The difference with a group instead of an individual is that instead of one client’s agenda, there are a number of clients with their own agendas. When the group is set up around a topic or theme, and focused on a certain type of individual, that will create ease, as there is a common agenda. And yet, each group member will also have their own specific intention for their group coaching experience. In order to support the individual and the group simultaneously, structures are put in place to facilitate the smooth balance of both. We’ll discuss the group coaching structure in our next post.
