When I began my coaching practice, I wanted to add this powerful offering to my repertoire and did not know exactly how to do this. So I set out to learn how to create an amazing group experience! The six-step model of group coaching has supported countless coaches over the years and helped them get their core message out in a bigger way. So far we’ve shared:

Group coaching is an important key to your business success! Now let’s reveal the last two steps for effective group coaching.

Step 5: Ideas for Action

In the fifth step of group coaching, specific requests and/or reflection questions are made of the group members.

You can make requests of an individual, or of the whole group. Listen for what actions and reflection questions will move them forward, and then make those requests. And tee it up that each request can be answered with yes, no, or even a counter-offer. Remember there is always a choice. In reminding them of this, you are reinforcing their own personal responsibility, which is one of the main tenets of coaching.

The reason that the requests—or any logistics—are in step 5 is that you want to end the group on a high note. Do all of the “group business” in step 5. Let them know when the next meeting is, and give them any reminders that need to be said. When all of this is done, then go on to the final step.

Step 6: Inspiration

The last step in the group meeting is self-acknowledgment or acknowledgment of what has been learned. Remember, at the end of each group meeting, you want to leave the members in a high vibration. Ask questions to close the group so that you can know where they are at, and so they can know the value they have received.

Sample Closing Questions

  • What is your takeaway?
  • What have you learned?
  • What would you like to acknowledge yourself for?
  • What is one word that describes what you want to reinforce for yourself?
  • What is one word that describes what you are taking with you today?

The group closing will take some time, so allow 30 seconds-1 minute per person so that you can come to an easy close with no rush. In fact, if you end a minute or two early, it is preferable to ending a few minutes late. This keeps you in integrity – keeping your word about the time the group ends. Also, once the group begins to run over, members may begin to check-out mentally, and you may not have their full presence.
