Years ago, I partnered with a very experienced sales coach on a program. When it came to teaching about that dreaded 30-second introduction, or elevator pitch as it’s called, I shared a 9 word sentence that I used that took literally less than 10 seconds to say. And she thought it was brilliant! I thought it was full of ease and joy and authenticity, that’s why I like to use it.

When someone asks, “What do you do?” here’s the response I give: “I work with the best clients in the world.” (btw, it’s the truth!!)

The next thing the person usually says is “Tell me about your clients.”

At that point, I share a story of a client that I’m working with (without identifying details) that has a similar ‘before’ story as the person I’m talking to. For example, if the person is a business owner, I could tell a story of a coach that I worked with and how I helped her increase her income.

The beauty of this approach is that I don’t have to prepare witty remarks about myself, and worry about how I feel about self-promotion. When I’m telling stories about my magnificent clients, I’m in a state of joy and confidence. And that’s the state that I’m in when I coach too. The person I’m introducing myself to gets a chance to experience my true authentic energy!

So next time someone asks you what you do, try sharing a story of one of your beloved clients and their success. And let me know how it goes!
